Operation: Now It’s Our Turn

Second Act Communities and Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation are taking national action to solve the emergency of chronic Veterans Homelessness. Our mission is to focus on how to solve the problem of homelessness amongst our American heroes, stabilize, and finally create the biggest solution to put them back on the track to self-sufficiency.

  • As of 2017, HUD (Dept. of Housing and Urban Development) estimated that 39,741 Veterans are homeless on any given night
  • 40% of the US population are Veterans
  • Roughly 9% are Female

In Hampton Roads

  • More than 9% of Veterans make up the population in the greater Hampton Roads area
  • In 2016, 193 homeless veterans were counted on the street

National Actions

Operation: Now It’s Our Turn, Social Media Challenge

Kick Off Date: May 1st, 2018

Where: Nation Wide Social Media

We have created the #WallSitChallenge social media initiative.

Step 1: Have a friend record you doing the challenge for a minimum of 1 minute

Step 2: Post your video and challenge branded graphic on a social media outlet with the hashtag #WallSitChallenge (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Blog)

Step 3: Challenge a family member, friend or colleague to try to beat your best time

Step 4: Make the challenge viral by sharing it with all of your social media networks, and ask them to do the same

Step 5: Make a pledge donation to Operation: Now It’s Our Turn and link that pledge to your social media pages.

Local Actions

Operation: Now It’s Our Turn Rally

When: Saturday, July 14th, 2018

Time: 10am-12pm

Where: MacArthur Center Park, Norfolk VA

This event is not a protest. It is a day to come together as a community to bring awareness to our American heroes that live on the streets because of Mental Health Issues, Drug Abuse or the inability to transition back into civilian life. This event will be the first local kick off action for Operation: Now It’s Our Turn. The rally will also push towards our next activity, the Sleepout for the Homeless in Norfolk, VA.

Operation: Now It’s Our Turn Veteran’s BBQ Cook-Off and Awards

When: Saturday, October 6, 2018

Time: 11:00am – 6:00pm

Where: Richmond, Virginia

Come out, bring the family, enjoy the music and taste some of the best BBQ in Virginia. #ONIOT, A campaign to End Veteran Homelessness, in collaboration with Bethesda Baptist Church. All proceeds will go to Operation: Now It’s Our Turn.

Operation: Now It’s Our Turn, Sleepout for the Homeless

When: October 2018

Time: TBD

Where: Towne Pointe Park, Norfolk VA

 Sleepout for the Homeless will be in Collaboration with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The Sleepout for the Homeless will be placed in Norfolk, VA during the month of October. Sleepouts have impacted communities nationwide. The concept brings real-time awareness to an epidemic that is happening to our veterans, children, and families.

On any given night, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 39,471 veterans are homeless.
